Google shopping: How does it work?

Google Shopping is a feature that Google offers to clients that wish to display their products in Google searches. When a consumer searches for a product using the Google search engine, clients that have paid to be placed in the shopping results will show up first to the consumer. Clients provide a picture of their product, a title for the product and a short description. Once the consumer selects the product, they are redirected to the client's website to make their purchase.

Getting started:

In order to start getting benefits from this program, a client will first need to have two accounts: an AdWords account and a Google Merchant Center account. Both of these accounts can be created through the links provided in the Google Support pages for AdWords. Once these accounts are created, the client can upload a product list to the Merchant Center. Google Shopping then begins to pair the products with the searches from Google users. The product listing does not retrieve the client's products using keywords used by the customer. Instead, they use details from the product list that was uploaded to the Merchant Center to better filter out results. This allows the products to appear in a broader range of searches.

Monetary value:

Google Shopping has a set system for payment that they refer to as the "cost-per-click" system. The client sets a maximum bid for their product listing space after uploading their product list. This maximum bid determines what place the product is shown in the list retrieved during a search. The higher the maximum bid, the closer to first the product will be shown. Google Shopping only takes out the minimum amount to place the client ahead of the next advertiser, so most clients pay less than their maximum bid. Google Shopping does not charge the client for clicks that redirect within the Google Shopping website. A client is only charged when a customer is redirected to their own website.

Client expectations:

As an advertiser within the Google Shopping network, the client can expect that their products will be shown as often as possible. Since Google Shopping does not rely solely on keywords, products are more likely to be shown when a customer is searching in the general category of the client's products and not just when they use a word specifically from the description. Google Shopping also has carefully outlined their pricing and payout system to give the client the best opportunity to have their products shown, while charging the least for the service the client wants.

Customer expectations:

Customers can expect to be given a broader range of products that fit the description of what they are looking for. They can also expect to be given the best quality products from clients that are confident enough in their product to compete for the highest ranking search results. Google Shopping guarantees that products will be shown based off of bids by the clients, so poorly maintained product lines and information will not be displayed first, giving the customer a more accurate product recommendation and access to higher quality products.
